Master of Health Administration grad continuing cancer research in PhD in Health program

Faramarz Jalili (MHA’24) is now in the PhD in Health program.

When Faramarz Jalili (MHA’24) started the Master of Health Administration program, he had extensive education in pharmacy and health-care economics.

That previous education and his desire to contribute to health-care policy inspired him to pursue his MHA degree, and to address issues such as socioeconomic inequalities in health-care access.

Jalili’s thesis focused on socioeconomic inequalities in colorectal cancer screening.

Now, in the PhD in Health program, he is continuing that research. His current study is on the bidirectional relationship between food insecurity and cancer outcomes in Canada.

Stepping-stone

Jalili says the MHA program and Faculty of Health has provided a rigorous academic environment, opportunities for practical experience in health-care leadership and mentorship from distinguished faculty – which has equipped him with the skills required to excel in the field of health-care administration.

“This degree is a stepping-stone toward my long-term goal of influencing healthcare systems and improving public health outcomes, especially in vulnerable populations.”

Jalili had many successes during his MHA – including winning the Shannex Prize in Innovative Practice for Aging Population, the Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship, and was part of the Health Administration Search committee.

In addition to the academics, Jalili was a mentor and tutor at Dalhousie.

“The opportunities to conduct meaningful research, engage in healthcare policy discussions, and mentor other students have been beyond what I initially imagined.”

The benefits of the program and province

Jalili is from Iran and is a professional mountain climber. He says Nova Scotia’s landscapes are perfect for outdoor activities and helps balance academic life with adventure and sport.

To those who are considering the MHA program – Jalili says it’s an ideal choice if you are passionate about leadership and improving health-care systems.

“I would encourage students to embrace the diverse opportunities this program offers. The MHA thesis option program is designed not only to provide a solid foundation in healthcare management, but also to give you the tools to make a real difference in the healthcare sector.”
