3 min read

As mental health awareness gains momentum globally, healthcare companies are emerging with progressive healthcare solutions. With a keen focus on breaking down barriers to accessing quality mental health services, Sukoon Health recently introduced cashless insurance coverage for psychiatric inpatient care. This initiative comes as a response to the pressing need to address mental health issues effectively.

To explore the intricacies of Sukoon Health‘s approach, ETHealthworld’s Rashmi Mabiyan Kaur interacted with Co-Founder & Chief Growth Officer Vidit Bahri on the company’s vision, collaborative efforts, and the transformative impact they aim to achieve in the landscape of mental healthcare in India. Edited excerpts:

Q: What prompted Sukoon Health to introduce cashless insurance coverage for mental health care?
Sukoon Health introduced cashless insurance coverage for mental health care in response to a growing recognition of the importance of mental health and the barriers that individuals often face in accessing quality care. Sukoon Health recognized that mental health issues are prevalent and can have a significant impact on individuals’ well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. By offering cashless insurance coverage for mental health care, we aim to reduce financial barriers and stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment, making it more accessible and affordable for individuals in need.Q: What mental health conditions does the insurance aim to cover?
Sukoon Health’s comprehensive mental health insurance offers coverage for a wide range of conditions, including Bipolar disorder, Acute Depression, Anxiety disorders, Schizophrenia, Mood disorder, Psychotic disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. By ensuring the inclusion of these diagnoses, Sukoon guarantees that policyholders can access the care they need without fear of claim denial.

Q: With which companies have Sukoon established collaborations? How will patients avail of the cashless insurance benefits?

We have established collaborative partnerships with private insurance providers, including HDFC ERGO, MAGMA HDI, ICICI LOMBARD, ADITYA BIRLA CAPITAL, and RELIANCE GENERAL INSURANCE. To avail cashless insurance benefits, individuals are required to undergo a minimum hospitalization period of 24 hours, acting as the necessary duration for initiating insurance claims within the mental health coverage. However, certain treatments, such as those for alcohol dependence, substance dependence, self-harm, and talk therapy, are excluded from coverage and are ineligible for cashless insurance benefits.Q: How do you perceive the current level of awareness regarding seeking timely support for mental health issues? Which age groups are witnessing the rise of mental health disorders in India?
There is a significant treatment gap when it comes to Mental Health. We need to do a better job when it comes to early intervention and prevention. The largest age groups affected are from 20-40.

Q: What challenges around mental health can the insurance plan address?
The persistent stigma surrounding mental health in Indian society often deters individuals from seeking assistance or openly discussing their mental health issues. Moreover, the prolonged treatment and support required for serious mental health disorders can impose significant financial strain on individuals and families. However, Sukoon Health’s insurance plan, encompassing a wide array of treatment options such as therapy, medication, and rehabilitation services, facilitates seamless continuity of care. This comprehensive coverage not only supports individuals throughout their recovery journey but also alleviates the financial burden associated with long-term mental health treatment.

Q: What are the company’s expansion plans going forward?
We opened our first facility in Gurgaon in 2020. Since then, we’ve opened three facilities in Delhi-NCR. Our vision is to create 40 such hospitals, pan India, and create a model of Mental Healthcare that sets a global benchmark. We will start expanding in Tier-1 cities and then move to Tier-2 and 3. We have Bangalore, Mumbai, and Mohali lined up.
