IGNOU launches MBA in healthcare & hospital management | Education News

The Indira Gandhi National Institute of Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a new programme titled Master of Business Administration in Health Care and Hospital Management. The course is for graduated students with at least 50 per cent marks (45 per cent in case of candidates belonging to reserved categories as per the norms of Govt. of India).

The programme seeks to create a skilled workforce ready for employment in healthcare institutions, related organizations, and hospitals within the private and public sectors. This initiative by IGNOU aims to provide effective support and ensure high-quality healthcare nationwide, including in remote areas, read the press release. 

After completing the programme, the students can be appointed to managerial and administrative posts in healthcare institutions/healthcare-related institutions. Students are required to pay fees semester-wise of Rs 15,500 for 1st Semester, Rs 15,500 for 2nd Semester, Rs 19,500 for 3rd Semester, and Rs 17,500 for 4th Semester.

The programme has 112 credits in four semesters.  The first and second semesters have seven core courses each with four credit, while the third and fourth semesters have specialized courses. Students have to undertake a project and undergo a practical in the third semester. In the practical course, they will be posted in the hospitals or any healthcare institutions and undergo practical skills in a hospital setting. The students are also expected to undergo a three-month internship in a healthcare-associated institution or hospital identified by them.

Along with the above, here are some of the learning outcomes, student can expect after the completing the course:

– Learn modern management techniques like inventory control, economic order quantity (EOQ), operational research, organisational development, management information system,s etc.

– Plan how to face the problems of hospital management, and learn methods of problem-solving and decision-making, utilising biostatistics in planning, and in medico-administrative research. 

– Assess the clinical and non-clinical patient care needs, understanding the administrative and technical requirements of physicians and paramedical personnel.

– Apply the principles and functions of general management to various services to maximize efficiency.

– Learn the principles and practices of health management and its interactive roles with medical care in hospitals along with the use of epidemiological techniques to study the prevalence of diseases and their patterns in the community to plan health care services.
