International Medical Aid (IMA) Opens Applications for Summer and Fall/Winter 2025 Programs: Empowering the Next Generation of Healthcare Leaders

Founded by two Johns Hopkins alumni, IMA has established itself as a trusted name in healthcare education. It offers award-winning programs that bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world practice. The organization’s not-for-profit model ensures its programs benefit participants and the communities they serve.

The Summer and Fall/Winter 2025 programs are tailored to meet the needs of a diverse range of participants, including high school students exploring healthcare careers, pre-med undergraduates, medical students, and licensed professionals seeking global experience. With many internship opportunities, IMA provides placements in medicine, nursing, dentistry, mental health, nutrition, physiotherapy, and midwifery. These programs are hosted in dynamic healthcare settings across East Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, allowing participants to work alongside dedicated physicians and healthcare professionals in underserved communities.

One of the hallmarks of IMA’s programs is their structured approach to healthcare education. Each internship is carefully designed to provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience, beginning with region-specific orientations and training on infection control. Dedicated physician mentors guide interns throughout their placements, ensuring they gain valuable clinical skills and a deeper understanding of global health challenges. Additionally, IMA’s in-country and U.S.-based staff provide continuous support, creating a safe and enriching environment for participants.

IMA’s commitment to excellence is reflected in the glowing feedback from recent alums sharing their transformative experiences on IMA’s GoAbroad profile. These testimonials provide a detailed and authentic look at the profound impact of IMA’s programs on participants’ personal and professional growth.

Preet Lehal, a pre-med student from Canada, participated in IMA’s Global Health & Pre-Medicine Internship in Kenya and described her experience as “unparalleled.” She praised the program’s mentors for building personal relationships with interns and ensuring they felt at home, even thousands of miles away. “The mentors went above and beyond to make us feel supported,” she shared. “I never once doubted my safety at the residency or with the staff.

Preet’s internship at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) was a defining moment in her journey toward a medical career. She witnessed the resilience of healthcare professionals who worked tirelessly despite limited resources and systemic challenges. “It was highly inspiring to see the staff show up daily against all the barriers they faced,” she said. “This experience has forever impacted my life.”

Preet also highlighted the emotional depth of her internship, from witnessing patients’ pain to participating in community outreach programs. “The orphanages and community outreach experiences were outstanding,” she noted. “The staff continuously took feedback and adjusted schedules to meet our needs and interests.”

Another recent alum, Sarah Batakanwa from the University of Ottawa, echoed similar sentiments, describing her time with IMA as a “home away from home.” She emphasized the program’s supportive environment, allowing her to thrive personally and professionally. “The kindness and friendliness of the other interns and staff created a warm, judgment-free space where we all strived to bring each other up,” she said.

In addition to its internship programs, IMA offers comprehensive medical school admissions consulting services. Navigating the complex process of applying to medical school can be daunting, and IMA’s team of experienced consultants provides personalized guidance to help students succeed. From crafting compelling personal statements to preparing for interviews, IMA’s consultants equip students with the tools they need to secure admission to top medical schools.

The organization’s focus on ethical and sustainable programming has earned it a reputation as a leader in global health education. IMA ensures its programs have a lasting impact by creating mutually beneficial opportunities for participants and host communities. This approach not only enriches the educational experience for participants but also strengthens healthcare systems in the regions where IMA operates.

As IMA opens applications for its Summer and Fall/Winter 2025 programs, the organization invites aspiring healthcare professionals to embark on a journey that will transform their careers and lives. Whether it’s gaining hands-on clinical experience, exploring new cultures, or contributing to global health initiatives, IMA’s programs offer unparalleled opportunities for growth and impact.
