In an initiative to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices in the healthcare sector, the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) has launched the NABH Guidebook for Climate Action and Sustainability in Healthcare.
Dr Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO of NABH, introduced the guidebook, emphasizing its significance in addressing the healthcare sector’s role in environmental stewardship. He stated, “Sustainability is no longer an option but a necessity. This guidebook serves as a roadmap for healthcare organizations to integrate sustainability into their operations while ensuring quality care and resilience against climate challenges.”
The guidebook offers a strategic framework tailored to help healthcare organizations adapt to climate change, build resilience, and implement sustainable practices. It includes the core concepts of sustainability in healthcare and actionable steps for organizations to follow.
A user-friendly checklist enables healthcare providers to evaluate their current practices and identify areas for improvement. This tool aims to simplify the journey toward achieving climate goals.
Real-world examples and case studies showcase successful implementations of sustainable practices, offering inspiration and practical insights for healthcare organizations.
NABH has made this critical resource freely available for download to encourage widespread adoption. This document along with a self-assessment checklist is available for free download on NABH official website.
Dr Kochhar announced NABH’s forthcoming Self-Certification Scheme for Climate Action and Sustainability in Healthcare, which will enable accredited and certified healthcare organizations to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable operations. This initiative reflects NABH’s broader mission of promoting “One Earth, One Health, One Future,” ensuring that quality, safety, and wellness extend to the most vulnerable communities.
Urging healthcare organizations to act decisively, Dr Kochhar stressed the urgency of the moment stating, “Healthcare has a pivotal role to play in mitigating climate change impacts. By adopting sustainable practices, we can lead the charge in creating a healthier planet while ensuring the well-being of our patients and communities.”
Healthcare organizations are encouraged to download the guidebook, integrate its principles into their operations, and prepare for the upcoming self-certification scheme. NABH’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future is a clarion call for the industry to align with global efforts in combating climate change.
