Safeguarding communities and investing in a healthier, better educated future are priorities that matter most to the residents of Oakville North-Burlington
The Ontario government believes that a strong and secure future begins with safe communities and smart investments in people. That’s why the Ford government is doubling down on its commitment to building stronger, safer communities, where people feel secure, have access to the care they need, and where young people are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow.
In Oakville North-Burlington, MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos, who is also the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming is at the forefront of this progress. She says, “Keeping families and communities safe, healthy, and prepared for the future are top priorities for our government.”
A stronger, safer Ontario
Across the province the government is making record investments to keep people safe and secure. Triantafilopoulos says these efforts are already making a difference. “From boosting local police resources to expanding the province’s dedicated Major Auto Theft Prosecution Response Team, we’re taking decisive action to hold criminals accountable and protect what matters most.” The government’s proposed auto theft legislation would give police the authority to search and seized electronic devices used for vehicle theft. It’s an effort to keep keyless devices out of the hands of would-be criminals.
The government has taken steps to improve the bail system by strengthening the collection process for forfeited bail and introducing permanent Intensive Serious Violent Crime Bail Teams to make stronger cases against an accused requesting bail. Triantafilopoulos says, “The people of Ontario have demanded that their government do something about repeat and violent offenders walking in and out of our revolving door justice system, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. For example, our government has repeatedly called on the federal government to reform the bail system so that it protects communities – not repeat offenders.”
Ontario is also making bold moves to support vulnerable communities:
- $1 million to aid human trafficking survivors
- Restoring safety in parks and public spaces by working alongside municipalities to move people living in encampments into stable and secure accommodations, reducing public drug use and ensuring safer green spaces for everyone
- $12.75 million for Anti-Hate Security and Prevention Grants, enabling faith-based and cultural organizations to install cameras and other protective measures to reinforce the safety and inclusivity of community spaces. “Keeping families and communities safe is a top priority for our government. That’s why we’ve made record investments to fight crime, crack down on auto theft, and strengthen public safety both across the province and right here in Oakville North-Burlington.
Working together, the Ontario government is making Oakville North-Burlington a safer place to live, work, and raise a family.
Investments in healthcare
The Ontario government is dedicated to improving access to healthcare. Triantafilopoulos says, “Our government is delivering real results for patients and families in Oakville North-Burlington by building a stronger, more connected healthcare system, from expanding hospital infrastructure to reducing wait times and investing in long-term care, we’re taking action to ensure people can access the care they need, closer to home.”
The government has also funded nearly 66,000 MRI operating hours and more than 31,000 CT operating hours over the past year in existing community surgical and diagnostic centres. Triantafilopoulos adds, “Further, we are expanding community surgical and diagnostic centres to deliver more publicly-funded procedures to reduce the surgical backlog and wait times. Whether it’s new beds, more nurses, or faster diagnostics, we’re putting patients first and strengthening healthcare for today and in the future.”
At the same time, the province is working to improve access to primary care by connecting more people with family doctors and supporting healthcare professionals. They recently announced a $235 million investment to support over 130 new and expanded primary care teams that will connect 300,000 people provide-wide to primary care this year.
Mental health is also a top priority for the Ontario government. “That’s why we’re funding a new mental health unit at Joseph Brant Hospital. This investment will bring expanded services, including outpatient, youth programming, and psychiatric care, to Burlington, ensuring residents get the support they need closer to home.”
Investing in brighter futures
The Ontario government is making significant investments in education, including record funding for core education and school renewal in Oakville North-Burlington, one of the fastest growing areas in the province. Triantafilopoulos says, “Since being elected, our government has invested nearly $226 million to approve or support the development of five new elementary schools, one new secondary school, and a secondary school expansion in Oakville North-Burlington. Combined, these investments have created 3,832 elementary student spaces, 1,568 secondary student spaces, and 440 new licensed childcare spaces.”
The Ontario government is making historic investments in education to ensure students in Halton succeed and thrive. Triantafilopoulos adds, “From building new schools and upgrading classrooms to expanding mental health supports and funding STEM and skilled trades programs, our government is focused on equipping the next generation with the tools they need to excel.”
With a bold vision for the future, the Ontario government is investing in public safety measures to crack down on crime, expanding access to healthcare close to home, and ensuring students gain the skills they need in a rapidly changing economy.
